This technology describes a method for 3D printing ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) — a material known for exceptional toughness and wear resistance, widely used in medical implants and industrial parts — using a process called powder bed fusion. The key innovation lies in controlling the precise pattern and spacing of the energy beam as it fuses each layer of powder, followed by a heat treatment step in an inert atmosphere to fully consolidate the printed part. UHMWPE has historically been extremely difficult to process with powder bed fusion because of its molecular structure, and this workflow appears to provide a viable path to printing it successfully.
