Thermal management IP for longer-lived resistive RAM

Electronics & SemiconductorsAdvanced MaterialsManufacturing & ProcessLab validated

This technology improves a type of non-volatile computer memory called resistive RAM (RRAM) by solving a heat buildup problem that degrades performance over time. The design sandwiches a copper heat-spreading layer beneath the platinum electrode that contacts the memory material, drawing heat away from the active memory cell each time data is written or erased. The result is a crossbar-architecture memory cell that retains the electrical performance of platinum electrodes while using copper's superior thermal conductivity to extend device lifespan. It is a structural fabrication innovation — a layer stack change — rather than a new material or circuit design.

What you could build

An improved RRAM chip or embedded memory IP block for semiconductor manufacturers targeting high-endurance storage-class memory or edge-AI inference chips; buyers would be memory chip foundries or fabless semiconductor companies integrating non-volatile memory into SoCs.

Who in Virginia should care

Defense and intelligence-community electronics suppliers in Northern Virginia, or semiconductor design firms near Virginia Tech's nanofabrication research base, would have plausible interest in ruggedized, high-endurance memory components.

Readiness: Lab validated

Concept — described but not yet demonstrated. Lab validated — supported by experimental results in the patent. Prototype likely — the text describes a built, working embodiment.

Readiness is inferred from the patent text, not from a lab visit.
