This technology addresses a persistent problem with Lyme disease: even after antibiotic treatment kills the bacteria, fragments of the bacterial cell wall (called peptidoglycan) can remain in joint fluid and drive ongoing inflammation that looks and feels like treatment failure. The researchers discovered that a human immune protein called NOD2 can be used to directly detect these peptidoglycan fragments in synovial fluid, enabling a specific test for Lyme arthritis. The same insight opens a therapeutic door: antibodies or enzymes that neutralize or destroy these peptidoglycan fragments could potentially resolve post-treatment Lyme arthritis, which currently has no approved targeted therapy.
