Soft-switching three-phase inverter with phase synchronization

Energy & Power ElectronicsElectronics & SemiconductorsTransportation & MobilityLab validated

This technology is a new type of power inverter that converts DC electricity into three-phase AC power more efficiently than conventional designs. It achieves this by carefully sequencing when each of its switches turns on and off so that the voltage across each switch is zero at the moment of switching — a technique called zero voltage switching — which dramatically reduces heat and energy losses. Critically, it does this across all three phases simultaneously while keeping them synchronized, which is a problem that has historically forced engineers to choose between efficiency and phase coordination. The result is a more compact, cooler-running inverter that wastes less energy.

What you could build

A high-efficiency three-phase power inverter module for solar inverters, EV charging stations, or industrial motor drives, sold to power electronics OEMs and tier-1 system integrators who need to meet tightening efficiency standards without bulky cooling hardware.

Who in Virginia should care

Defense and government facility power systems integrators in Northern Virginia, as well as data center and EV infrastructure developers in the Mid-Atlantic corridor, would have operational interest in higher-efficiency power conversion.

Readiness: Lab validated

Concept — described but not yet demonstrated. Lab validated — supported by experimental results in the patent. Prototype likely — the text describes a built, working embodiment.

Readiness is inferred from the patent text, not from a lab visit.
