This technology improves the accuracy of locating a mobile device (like a smartphone) on a wireless network by combining two types of signal measurements: one between the device and a known base station, and another between the device and nearby devices whose locations are also unknown. When the system generates multiple possible location estimates from base station signals alone, it uses the peer-to-peer signal measurement between unknown-location devices to pick the best one. The result is a more accurate location fix in environments where base station signals alone produce ambiguous results, such as indoors or in dense urban areas.
