IRE-based process for vascularized transplant-ready scaffolds
This technology uses a precise electrical pulse technique called irreversible electroporation (IRE) to kill the cells inside a natural tissue sample while leaving its blood vessels and nerve structures intact. The result is a cleaned-out biological scaffold — essentially a framework made of the tissue's original architecture — that can then be repopulated with new cells to create functional engineered tissue. Because the vascular network is preserved, these scaffolds can be built much thicker than conventional tissue engineering approaches allow, which has historically been a major barrier to creating transplantable organs and tissue grafts.
